Free website for home bakers in India: what you get, and what to watch out for

At some point every home baker gets the question: "Do you have a website?" Usually from the customer who's about to spend ₹2,000 on a fondant cake and wants to check you're real.

You don't need to spend lakhs to answer yes. One agency's 2026 guide puts a full custom bakery website with online ordering at ₹2.2 lakh to ₹4.6 lakh. (ColorWhistle) That's a fair price for a large bakery chain. It makes no sense for someone selling 30 cakes a month from a home kitchen in Indore or Kochi.

Free and low-cost website options exist. Some are genuinely useful. Some are free in the way a "free" phone cover with a ₹1,000 screen guard is free. Here's how to tell the difference.

What a home baker's website actually needs to do

Forget fancy design for a minute. Your website has four jobs:

  1. Show your cakes with real photos and clear prices
  2. Let customers order, with size, flavour, eggless and message options
  3. Tell people how delivery or pickup works
  4. Make you look trustworthy: FSSAI number, reviews, a real name

If a free option does these four things, it's enough to start.

The checklist: questions to ask before you sign up

Can customers actually order, or just look? A lot of "free websites" are really digital brochures. Customers see your cakes, then have to WhatsApp you anyway. That's better than nothing, but it doesn't save you time.

How many products can you list? Free plans often cap products. That's fine if you sell five signature cakes. It's a problem if your menu has 40 items.

What's the web address? Free plans usually give you an address like yourbakery.someplatform.com. That's okay to start. Check how much it costs to use your own domain later, and whether you can keep your customers when you switch.

Do they take a cut of each order? This is the big one. Some "free" platforms charge a percentage on every sale. On a ₹1,000 cake, even 5% is ₹50. Ask directly: is there any commission or transaction fee?

Who owns your customer list? If you leave, do you keep the names and phone numbers of everyone who ordered? You should. Those are your repeat orders.

Does it work well on a phone? Most of your customers will open the link from Instagram or WhatsApp on their phone. Open the demo on your own phone before deciding.

Is there a support number? When your site breaks at 9 p.m. on a Saturday before a busy Sunday, an email form that replies in three days isn't support.

When paying makes sense

Start free. Upgrade when one of these happens:

  • You want your own domain name (yourbakery.in) for printed boxes and cards
  • You've hit the product limit
  • You're getting enough orders that features like delivery booking or reports save you real time

Pay for what saves time or brings orders. Don't pay for design you don't need.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a website for my home bakery for free?

Yes. Several platforms offer free plans, usually with a limit on products and a shared web address. Check whether they charge a fee on each order.

Do I need a website if I have Instagram?

Instagram is great for being seen. A website or online menu is better for taking orders, because customers can pick options and you get every detail in one place.

Will a free website show up on Google?

It can, if the platform lets Google index your page and you add your bakery name, city and cake types to it. Add your link to your Google Business Profile too.
